Israel transitioned from remembering and mourning fallen soldiers and victims of terror on Yom HaZikaron, ה' אייר, to celebrations of 69 years of independence on Yom Ha'atzmaut .
Har Herzl Military Cemetery in Jerusalem was filled during the day of Yom HaZikaron. As night fell, the official state televised ceremony was being prepared on another part of the mountain near the grave of Theodore Herzl.
Twelve honorees are chosen each year to light one of twelve flames, one for each tribe of Israel. For the first time two non-Israelis were honored to light one flame, Rabbi Marvin Hier and Michael Steinhardt. Other honorees included Rebbitzen Chana Henkin (educator), Miri Ehrental (Zichron Menachem founder) and Dr. Ahmed Eid (Hadassah Hospital surgical head).
The ceremony was under the Ministry of Culture and Sport Member of Miri Regev. Sara Netanyahu was present and sat next to Regev. Members of Knesset and diplomatic and military attaches were also in attendance.
50 years of liberation and reunification of Jerusalem was the theme, with Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat joining Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein to light the opening ceremonial flame marking the start of Yom Ha'atzmaut.
Besides musical entertainment, IDF military units in dress uniforms marched with colored flags, forming a Magen David to end the program.
