Jerusalem - Thousands of Israelis gathered in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv on Saturday night to send a message of solidarity to the people of France on the heels of Friday’s deadly series of terror attacks in Paris that left 129 dead and hundreds wounded.

In addressing the emotional rally, Interior minister Silvan Shalom assured France’s ambassador Patrick Maisonnave and other French dignitaries in attendance that, “Israel stands by you and we will help you. We will defeat those who want to destroy our values. We will stand shoulder to shoulder with you as a nation that understands better than others what it is to be under a terror assault.”

Other speakers included former president Shimon Peres and Israel opposition leader Isaac Herzog who spoke amid intermittent chants of “vive la liberté.”

The rally ended with the singing of both the French and Israeli national anthems.
