Jerusalem, Israel - Nov. 11, 2015 - "I am, of course, a Zionist, and have been ever since the Balfour Declaration," stated Winston Churchill summarizing his support for Israel in 1956.
On November 4, 2012, a bust of Sir Winston Churchill was dedicated in Yael's Garden at Mishkenot Sha'ananim, across from the Walls of Jerusalem's Old City. Anthony Rosenfelder, a Trustee of the Jerusalem Foundation in the United Kingdom, initiated the project to honor Churchill.
On Tuesday evening, November 10, The Inaugural Annual Sir Winston Churchill Lecture was held in the Konrad Adenauer Conference Center at Mishkenot Sha'ananim.
Former Ambassador of Israel to the UK, Daniel Taub introduced the main speaker, the Lord Mayor of London Boris Johnson. Taub mentioned that as a young man Johnson had spent time on a kibbutz. Taub also, quipped, we have been waiting for Moshiach, but glad "Boris you have come."
In his informative and humorous remarks, the Lord Mayor said, Churchill knew how to drink, however, he was "never drunk on duty." "History is result of qualities of character" not just random events.
After delivering his lecture, Johnson sat down with Daniel Taub and answered questions from the audience. Johnson emphasized the importance of Israeli and London open exchange of ideas and technology. He also stated that the BDS - Boycott movement is small and should not interfere with future cooperation that his trade mission is in Israel to establish.
.Asked about being a politician, Johnson said, "you do not need to be fantastically clever. You need to keep going, like a bull at the gate, if you think you are right. Never, never, never, give in."
The lecture was open to the public, however, much of the audience was made up of members of Jerusalem Parliament, a new group of young Jerusalemites working to make Jerusalem a better place to work and live.
