Israel’s defense minister advised the public on Thursday to be constantly prepared for potential stabbing attacks, amid the current wave of violence.

Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon told NPR that Israelis should be aware they might be stabbed “in a minute,” and know how to respond in such an event. He said that police often handle the situation by killing the attackers, and asserted that the situation today is relatively calm compared to the period of suicide-bombings.

Yaalon said the recent surge in Palestinian terrorism against Israelis is a combination of “political and religious violence,” and that Islam has “become a precious, strategic asset for those trying to gain political gains.”

He also claimed Palestinians in Israel try to portray their plight as being more dire than it really is.

“They have their own government; they have their own parliament; they vote for their parliament…they have already political independence,” he told NPR. “And looking around, I believe that they enjoy quite a good life, not to compare to what’s going on in Syria and Yemen, and even in Lebanon and other countries in the region.”

Israelis and Arabs live together with “marginal problems,” he said.

Ya’alon was recently in Washington, DC, to discuss obtaining more weapons and enhancing security cooperation between the US and Israel, according to NPR.
