Baltimore, MD - Sept. 21, 2015 - On Sunday, November 8, 2015, Meir Panim will present For All Tastes, an evening of music, food & wine, at Beth Tfiloh Congregation. This two-pronged event will include an inspiring concert featuring musical selections from Cantors Avi Albrecht, Melvin Luterman and Emanuel Perlman, renowned performer Avraham Rosenblum, Koleinu: the Beth Tfiloh High School acapella choir, and HaZamir Baltimore.
A fabulous dairy, dessert and wine reception will follow, showcasing foods and wines generously donated by prominent Israeli companies. All proceeds will benefit Meir Panim, committed to ending hunger in Israel.
Current statics reveal that a staggering 1.65 million people in Israel live below the poverty line. 1 out of every 4 elderly citizens is destitute, and 1 out of every 3 children goes to bed hungry at least several times a week, creating a dire need for Meir Panim’s programs and services.
In a customized holiday program, Meir Panim provides approximately 2,500 families with grocery shopping cards. These debit cards are loaded with 250 shekels (approximately $72) and are awarded to needy individuals and families who can use them at major Israeli supermarket chains to purchase food and household items.
“These cards are truly a gift, giving needy families a chance to celebrate the holidays with peace of mind and shop for goods they really need,” said David Roth, president of American Friends of Meir Panim. “This support gives dignity and respect, empowering families to feel special at holiday time.”
Mali, a single mother of three small children, tells of how this card helped her get through Rosh Hashanah. Counting each coin during the year and running her household on a small budget while working full time as a grocery store cashier, Mali admits she could not get through the holidays without Meir Panim. “The extra money I received helped me start off the year optimistic,” she said. “I am so grateful!”
In addition to the food cards, the organization serves approximately 350,000 free meals each year out of restaurant-style soup kitchens and delivers meals-on-wheels to an additional 190,000 people. Meir Panim also distributes lunches to several schools in poor neighborhoods and hosts after-school programs and summer camps for needy children.
For more than a decade, tens of thousands of disadvantaged men, women, and children – including Holocaust survivors – have turned to Meir Panim as their source of hope for a brighter future. Meir Panim’s unwavering commitment to the people of Israel has helped bring lasting relief to the poor, encouragement for the less fortunate, new opportunities for struggling families, and hope for children-at-risk.
