Baltimore, MD - Feb. 26, 2018 - On Sunday, February 18, Yeshivas Kochav Yitzchok/Torah Institute of Baltimore, held its annual banquet, marking their 65th year of providing the highest level of Torah education to Baltimore's boys. This year's theme, “Bringing Out the Best in each Talmid,” highlighted the Cheder’s commitment to focusing on each talmid and nurturing him holistically. Honorees at this year's event were Dr. and Mrs. Yitzy Kaplowitz (Parents of the Year), Rabbi and Mrs. Yehuda Spatz (Grandparents of the Year), and Rabbi and Mrs. Joseph Katz (Guests of Honor).
Dr. Moshe Stern served as master of ceremonies. After welcoming the attendees, he introduced Harav Aharon Feldman, Shlita, Rosh Yeshivah of Yeshivas Ner Yisroel, who shared warm and inspiring divrei brachah. The Rosh Yeshiva praised the entire Cheder staff and its supporters, and then expounded on the Gemara that declares that those who teach children Torah are comparable to stars that give everlasting light.
Rabbi Hillel Tendler, President of the Cheder, delivered his annual "State of the Cheder Address." He announced that Rabbi Eliezer Eisgrau, who has devoted forty years to the Cheder, first as a Rebbe, then as Menahel and currently as Rosh Hanhala, is planning to retire at the end of this school year. Rabbi Tendler's expressions of gratitude for Rabbi Eisgrau’s monumental contributions to the Cheder were followed by a lengthy standing ovation by the entire crowd.
Rabbi Tendler noted the recent petirah of Harav Zvi Dov Slanger, zt”l, Rosh Yeshivah of Beis Hamedrash and Mesivta of Baltimore, a stinging loss for the entire Baltimore community. Rabbi Tendler choked up when he reminisced about Harav Slanger's yearly participation in the Cheder’s haschalas Gemara, where he lovingly presented each talmid with a Gemara and a kiss on his head.
Also noted was the petirah, earlier that day, of R' Shea Sternhell z"l, son of Harav Yitzchok Sternhell, zt”l, founder of the Cheder. R' Shea attended the Cheder in its early years and remained a dear friend of the Cheder long afterward.
Following these preliminaries, Rabbi Tendler welcomed the new presidium of the Cheder’s PTA (Ladies' Auxiliary). He thanked past presidents, Mrs. Hadassah Feldman and Mrs. Judy Krakauer for their years of service and presented them with tokens of appreciation, which were accepted by their husbands, Rabbi Binyamin Krakauer and Rabbi Kalman Feldman, on their behalves.
Rabbi Tendler concluded his remarks by expressing the Cheder's appreciation for a group of parent lay leaders, in recent years, who have transformed the Banquet, creating a beautiful program, drawing bigger crowds and raising significantly more funds. Mr. Mickey Katz, who spearheaded this effort, was presented with an award.
The attendees were then treated to an inspiring video presentation that reinforced the dinner's them of “Bringing Out the Best in Each Talmid,” while also highlighting several new initiatives.
The presentation of awards to the honorees followed. Short videos highlighted the accomplishments of each honoree.
For over fifty years, Rabbi and Mrs. Joseph Katz, Guests of Honor, have taught countless students from all walks of life, both formally and informally. Additionally, during his decades as a chaplain at Sinai Hospital, Rabbi Katz has touched hundreds of people and created a tremendous Kiddush Hashem. Mrs. Katz, the Cheder's indefatigable office manager, is also an accomplished shadchan. The love and care they shower on their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, some of whom are students in the Cheder, was reflected in the glowing (and humorous) comments some of the grandchildren made for the video.
Rabbi and Mrs. Yehuda Spatz, proud grandparents of Cheder talmidim, were the Cheder's Grandparents of the Year. The Spatzes are well-known models of Torah and chessed, who have dedicated their lives to Klal Yisroel’s children. Before moving to Baltimore, they were involved in Torah education in out-of-town communities. Mrs. Spatz has been teaching at the Cheder for almost thirty years.
Finally, Dr. and Mrs. Yitzy Kaplowitz were this year's Parents of the Year. Dr. Kaplowitz, a well-respected anesthesiologist, and Mrs. Kaplowitz, a teacher at Bais Yaakov, are pillars of their shul, Mercaz Torah U’Tefilah where they are involved in various shiurim and chesed projects. Together, they have built a home that is infused with Torah and chesed and are raising a beautiful mishpachah.
Aside from being a doctor, father, and lomeid Torah, Dr. Kaplowitz is also a talented and musician and composer in the community, and has used his musical gifts to spur many people to deeper levels of avodas Hashem. Before receiving his award, Dr. Kaplowitz presented a song, Ki Heim Chayeinu, which he composed in honor of the dinner. He then continued with several other songs, spurring the attendees to burst into spontaneous and lively dancing.
By all accounts, the dinner was a rousing success, strengthening the bonds and deepening the partnership between parents and the Cheder, a partnership on which the chinuch of our precious children depends.
