Rabbi Ze'ev Sharon said that the IDF prosecutors' decision to oppose Elor Azariya's appeal hurts army morale.
Rabbi Ze'ev Sharon, who heads the 'Arzai Halevanon' pre-army program in Shilo, told Arutz Sheva that the IDF Prosecutors' decision to oppose Elor Azariya's request to postpone the start of his sentence until IDF Chief Gadi Eizenkot reaches his decision is shameful.
"What is the urgency of putting him in jail?" asked Sharon. "If the Chief of Staff decides not to lighten his sentence, he will go to jail anyway. The military prosecution's stubborn insistence that Elor immediately enter prison is an injustice."
"This is a soldier who was serving his country, and the State of Israel should back him up even if he made a mistake. He is an outstanding soldier who did not harm an innocent but rather a terrorist. "
Azariya's lawyers had submitted a request to the military court, asking that they postpone the start of his sentence, scheduled for Wednesday, until after Eizenkot reaches a decision over whether to lighten Azariya's sentence.
"Part of Azariya's plea is the request that his prison sentence be changed to community service, and if granted, he would not have to enter prison at all," read the appeal.
Prosecutors urged the court to reject the application, saying that “A soldier who has committed an offense, and certainly one who has committed such a serious offense like the one the defendant has been found guilty of, should serve their sentence immediately."
