Jerusalem - Police Chief Roni Alsheikh said on Tuesday that senior police investigators have suffered harassment, just hours after reports surfaced that police have opened two additional investigations into Prime Minister Netanyahu’s activities.

It is not clear at this stage whether or not Alsheikh’s comments addressed directly the investigations surrounding Netanyahu. Earlier Tuesday, however, Israel Radio reported that an additional investigation was underway, File 3000, in addition to the ongoing investigations into allegations that Netanyahu accepted gifts in violation of ethics laws, and that he colluded with Yedioth Aharonoth publisher Amnon (Noni) Mozes to push legislation through the Knesset to benefit the newspaper in exchange for positive coverage.

The latest line of questioning, reportedly coordinated with individuals in Germany and elsewhere, surrounds allegations of impropriety over the purchase of three German-built submarines for the Israeli Navy. According to reports in late 2016 Netanyahu pushed the submarines’ purchase over the objections of military and civilian offiicials, including then-Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon. David Shimron, Netanyahu’s personal lawyer, also represents the local agent of the German shipyard that sold the boats, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

Netanyahu and Shimron have both denied any wrongdoing. But Police Commissioner Alsheikh said senior investigators have suffered harassment in recent weeks, although he denied having any additional information.

“I don’t know who’s doing it” Alsheikh said. “Everybody can offer their own explanations. But my job is to support all relevant parts of the law enforcement establishment…. On my watch, no one will interfere with the independence of the police department to do what it needs to do, in accordance with the law.”
