Rabbi Dov Fischer, who serves the Orthodox congregation of Young Israel Orange County, penned an essay this week defending his decision to support Republican Donald Trump in his bid for the presidency.
Fischer begins the essay by performing a rhetorical bait-and-switch, saying that he is disgusted with the election, so he has decided not to vote for either candidate. Instead, he says, “I am going to vote for the federal judiciary” and lists a half-dozen other ideological reasons to vote for the Republican candidate.
“If we do not have a robust rebound from the terrible recession of nearly a decade ago, let it not be because I voted based on some filthy talk that a candidate spoke 11 years ago,” Fischer writes, dismissing the Access Hollywood tape that led some to say Trump bragged about assault.
Fischer also spends quite a bit of the essay attacking Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, citing scandals like Whitewater and the missing emails.
“She even lied about her first name,” Fischer wrote. “Who lies about their name?”
By the end, Fischer talks himself into not just a denouncement of Clinton but a positive endorsement of Trump, calling him “the engine for the change America now needs.”
