Maryland plans to implement a hiring freeze next month as state officials examine options to cut costs.

The governor's office outlined in an email sent to state workers on Tuesday the state's efforts. Gov. Wes Moore said a state hiring freeze will take effect on July 1.

This comes as state leaders are working to find "cost savings and enhanced efficiency" without personnel reductions, such as consolidating facilities.

"As a critical means to achieve that end, the budget requires the executive branch to make $121 million in General Fund personnel cost reductions in fiscal year 2026," Moore said in the email that was sent from the Maryland Department of Budget and Management.... Read More: WBAL TV
