Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker faced backlash from Jewish organizations after vetoing a bill mandating state public schools and hospitals to offer religious dietary options like kosher and halal upon request, according to JNS. While state and federal prisons provide such dietary accommodations due to the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000, the same provision doesn't extend to state schools and hospitals. The bill, IL HB3643, introduced on February 17 with 33 sponsors, was vetoed by Pritzker on August 11. On May 27, the legislation was amended to make each school district offer religious dietary options during school lunch programs, provided the State Board of Education could ensure a statewide education master contract. The bill also required state hospitals to offer these dietary choices. Despite passing in both state houses, Pritzker rejected the bill, stating that local districts have better expertise in food-service contracts based on their communities' unique needs.
