Baltimore, MD - June 3, 2023  - Baltimore's leading prosecutor, Ivan Bates, plans to introduce a new citation docket to address quality of life concerns in the city, according to FOX45. This would cover offenses like dirt bike charges, loitering, and possession with intent to distribute marijuana for adults 18 and over. This approach contrasts sharply with Bates' predecessor, Marilyn Mosby, who ceased prosecuting what she deemed low-level crimes in 2021. The plan has faced criticism, particularly on social media, with concerns it might disproportionally affect young black men. Bates defended the initiative, stating that law enforcement will first warn individuals before issuing a citation. He also highlighted that offenders could complete community service and be connected with programs for things like drug treatment and job training rather than face prosecution.“I’m not in this position to coddle these individuals. We’re trying to get help and if they don’t want help they’ll be prosecuted,” he said.
