Baltimore, MD - Jan. 29, 2023 - Fox45 reports that Senator Kagan is sponsoring the Gas Price Gouging Act (Senate Bill 178) which requires retail gas stations in Maryland to display the prices for regular gasoline clearly and visibly with credit, debit, and cash prices stated. The current law requires gas stations to post the lowest price for regular gasoline, which is often cash, and 78% of drivers use credit or debit cards. The act aims to address the "bait and switch" technique used by gas station owners who publicize a lower price but charge a higher price for using credit or debit cards. Retailers may add a 25-cent per gallon surcharge. Most states have regulations that require cash and credit prices to be displayed and the highest price to be most prominent. Gas stations make a small profit margin on gasoline sales and often make more money from customers who purchase other items in the store. The next hearing for the bill is on February 9th. If passed, the pilot program will begin on October 1, 2023.
