President Isaac Herzog and First Lady Michal Herzog hosted the central celebrations of the morning of Israel's 74th Independence Day at the President's Residence, with the participation of Israel's top leadership, including Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Defense Minister Benny Gantz, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, and General Staff officers past and present.
The celebrations continued with the traditional ceremony honoring outstanding IDF soldiers. The event featured new covers of a selection of Israeli songs by artists Agam Buhbut, Benaia Barabi, Elai Botner & the Outside Kids, military ensembles, and the IDF Orchestra.
The ceremony began with an honorary flyover by Israeli Air Force combat planes and helicopters, in a tribute to the outstanding soldiers, representing all branches of the IDF, after which the President and the IDF Chief of Staff reviewed the outstanding soldiers in formation. The event took place for the first time in a special structure that allowed guests to sit around the stage.
President Isaac Herzog chose to dedicate Israel's 74th Independence Day festivities to social and human encounters between Israelis, of the sort that bring out the best in everyone across all walks of Israeli society. As such, the event included video clips about individuals and organizations spreading a spirit of volunteering and light in Israeli society. President Isaac Herzog chose to join the Israel National Trail, founded by the Society for the Preservation of Nature in Israel, together with young hikers attempting to complete the full trail. After their hike together, the President and the hikers met some "Trail Angels": individuals and families who host hikers along their path and provide them a roof and meals throughout their 1,000 km-long trek. Oren and Meirav Sharabi from Moshav Eshtaol, parents of three children, welcomed the President and the young trekkers for a short conversation in which they described their experiences hosting hundreds of youngsters in their homes.
During the event, in a special tribute by President Herzog, guests watched the first-ever screening of artist Yardena Arazi performing songs by late songwriter Yoram Taharlev.
Later, special video greetings from U.S. President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida were broadcast.
The celebrations took place in the gardens of the President's Residence and were emceed by Doria Lampel and Amos Tamam.
President Isaac Herzog's full speech:
"Happy Independence Day, Israel! Michal and I are excited to open our home, the nation's home, to you on the State of Israel's birthday. Long live the State of Israel! In recent times, in recent years, we have witnessed many challenges, to which we have risen. First of all, we have seen our wonderful healthcare system confronting the coronavirus and various challenges, and we thank it from the bottom of our hearts. We have witnessed our wonderful security services, which continue to confront challenges day and night, and we thank them. We have seen our national institutions, in the fields of welfare and education, public security, culture and art, science and higher education, in the worlds of Torah and thought and philosophy. Michal and I see this day-in day-out, hour by hour, as we embark on a wondrous journey across Israeli society. I want to tell the whole People of Israel: we're allowed to give ourselves a slap on the back on a day like this. Mazel tov!
We have seen groundbreaking agreements, which have brought us blessings with our neighbors in Arab states. We have seen the Israeli economy bravely dealing with moments of hardship, and Israeli industry continuing to become a recognizable global brand. We have been moved to tears by our athletes. Michal and I were moved, and our hearts burst with pride with the incredible Linoy and Artem, and with Iyad, Mark, and Ami, true giants, and with all our other athletic champions. Eight gold medals, that's no easy feat!
We have also seen heroines and heroes, in the Israel Defense Forces, in Mossad and the Shin Bet, in the Israel Police, in the Prisons Service, and in the emergency and rescue services, keeping us safe, day and night.
I feel I must share, in the past few weeks Michal and I have been consoling bereaved families from the wave of terror striking us, families who have impressed and moved us. We also met families of fallen Border Police and Israel Police officers: Yazan Falah, Shirel Aboukrat, and Amir Khoury, who were felled by the fire of depraved murderers. We have borne witness to unimaginable strengths. I am moved that the family of the heroic officer Amir Khoury, who expressed to us the incredible Israeli partnership, are honoring us here today with their presence, and they deserve respect and love from us all.
Citizens of Israel, we must remember: we would not have been so successful had we not done all of this together. The dazzling Israeli mosaic is our special power.
Dear friends, here on the stage are the 120 outstanding soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces. From all branches and corps, from all across the country, and from all across our nation’s diaspora. You are our true pride. I salute you. I have read your stories. I was moved by your stories. Truly, by each and every one. You are here thanks to who you are, and thanks to who we are—thanks to you! Thank you very much! I extend the same gratitude to you, dear parents and families. We are proud of your children, and we are excited together with you.
Dear State of Israel, this Independence Day, it is time to think ahead, to plan a path beyond tomorrow, and to focus on a vision for the State of Israel in its 100th year of independence. There are mighty challenges ahead of us, there are great opportunities ahead of us, and we shall rise to the occasion only if we remain united. We must act with solidarity, with an outstretched hand, with responsibility.
Together with you, I pray for the return of our captured and missing soldiers and civilians, and for the full health of all the wounded, in body and in spirit. I hope that we will all reach next year, Israel’s 75th Independence Day, with achievements, with unity, with free love, and with tons of pride."
