Rocket alert sirens sounded twice in Israel's southern area near the border Tuesday night

In a significant escalation of the conflict in Gaza, a high-ranking member of Hamas' military wing was killed along with his guard and four other Palestinians, the Gaza health ministry stated, during what appeared to be a special IDF operation.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said an exchange of fire broke out "during IDF operational activity in the Gaza Strip."

It also said that no soldiers were abducted as mixed local media reports flooded in of Israeli air strikes that targeted various positions in the southern Palestinian enclave near Khan Yunis.

At least two rounds of rocket alert sirens sounded in Israel's communities bordering Gaza.

IDF Spokesperson posted on social media an updated summary of the events at around 11:00 PM IST.

"IDF operated in the Gaza Strip, exchange of gunfire ensued. All IDF soldiers back in Israel. Several alarms have sounded in Southern Israel. More to follow," Jonathan Conricus wrote in a tweet.

The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades member killed was speculated to be Nour Barakeh, considered to be responsible for the tunnel offensive strategy coming out of the Palestinian enclave.

Local media reported that Barakeh may have been aware of the whereabouts of Hadar Goldin, one of the Israeli soldiers captured in the Gaza-Israeli conflict in 2014.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was updated as Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman conducted security consultations at the army's central base in Tel Aviv.
