Jerusalem, Israel - July 9, 2018 - For over 3,000 years, Jerusalem’s heroes have changed the face of the city and influenced generations.  In the Tower of David Museum new exhibit, “Rock Paper Scissors”, artist Karen Sargsyan uses the stories, legends, myths and history of the eternal city as a basis for his sculptures.

Before being accepted to a prestigious Dutch art institute, after high-school in Armenia, Sargsyan studied sport at college, excelling in boxing and was a professional boxer for seven years. During his sport studies Sargsyan took anatomy courses, the workings of the body, muscles and joints fascinated him and can be seen in his sculptures.

Travelling to Israel to work for three months in preparation for this exhibit, Sargsyan brought along 100 kilograms of aluminum and 3,000 knives to create the nine pieces on display throughout the Tower of David archaeological garden and citadel.  Though most of his work has been using paper, these outdoor sculptures are crafted from aluminum.

The dynamic historical personalities are presented in action, while the scene relates to ancient history of the surroundings. Sargsyan’s exhibit features the varied heroes from the glorious past of Jerusalem, monumental statues of rulers:  David, Solomon, Herod, Cyrus the Great, the Queen of Sheba, Crusader Queen Melisende and Suleiman the Magnificent, together with the modern personalities of Anna Ticho and Eliezer Ben Yehuda.

Museum Director and curator of this exhibit, Eilat Lieber emphasized the goal of the Tower of David Museum is, over the summer to have families from all over Israel come. not just to entertain, but to educate.

Besides the exhibit, workshops are planned for children, for families, and for adults, during the summer months in an air conditioned tent in the Tower of David moat, and will focus on the different techniques of using paper, paper cutting, collage and use of soft materials for creating works of different sizes and shapes.  Sargsyan will host gallery talks, art classes and sessions which will focus on his artistic work and the messages he hopes to convey through his work.
