A two-year-old boy died Tuesday afternoon, after he was forgotten in a car outside of Haifa in northern Israel.

The child was left in a vehicle in the haredi community of Rechasim near Haifa for a number of hours before he was discovered.

Paramedics and emergency first responders from MDA and United Hatzalah were called to the scene, and attempted to resuscitate the child.

Despite their efforts to save the boy, however, emergency medical teams were ultimately forced to declare the child dead.

“When I got there, I saw a toddler, unconscious, next to a car,” said MDA paramedic Haim Atia. “He wasn’t breathing and had no heartbeat. His body temperature was extremely high. I was told that he had been locked inside a hot car for a number of hours.”

“We performed resuscitation techniques on him, but he had signs of heatstroke and no vital signs, and after a short time he was declared dead by an MDA paramedic.”

A police spokesperson said an investigation into the incident has been opened.
