Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is again speaking out against crime in the city and Baltimore City Mayor Brandon Scott is asking to meet about solutions.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Hogan was asked about an incident that took place Sunday night in the city where two Korean women were assaulted at the Wonderland Liquor Store in Druid Heights. Surveillance video showed a man attacking the women with a cement block as they were closing late Sunday night.

"I was outraged," Hogan said. "It was pretty hard to watch with two older women being smashed in the head with a cinderblock. We're going to get to the bottom of this."

Addressing a recent surge in violence, Hogan said:

“We are very concerned about the increase in violent crime in the city. It’s got three main root causes. No. 1, we are not doing anything about the violent repeat offenders and all the people that are committing the gun crimes over and over again. Two years in a row we had legislation that would address that. It passed the senate both times, an overwhelmingly Democratic Senate, and both times the House killed it with the help of the Baltimore City delegation. So, No. 1 we have to get tougher laws. No. 2 we can't defund the police, which is the mayor's plan, we got to invest more in our police. And No. 3, we have to have a prosecutor that's willing to prosecute crimes."

Soon after, Hogan sent out a tweet saying, “The increase of violent crime in Baltimore City is unacceptable. Rather than defunding our police, we need to invest more in law enforcement, pass better laws to hold violent criminals accountable, and we need prosecutors who will actually prosecute those laws.”

Scott then responded to that tweet saying, “Rather than relying solely on status quo "solutions" and #MAGA talking points, how about actually meeting with me to discuss violent crime, gun trafficking, or restarting the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council — as I've asked before? @GovLarryHogan, I'm ready when you are.”

State's Attorney for Baltimore City Marilyn Mosby also responded to Hogan's comments by tweeting, "The audacity of Mr. Blue Lives Matter, the man who vetoed police reform; killed the red line; vetoed education funding increases through Kirwan; yet never misses a chance to dump on Baltimore City. Stop only being “concerned” about Baltimore when it’s politically convenient for you."

Earlier this week, Scott, along with Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison, said that they’ll keep looking for ways to suppress violence after a string of deadly days pushed the city’s homicide count far beyond last year’s pace.
