Impeachment push said ditched after supreme leader steps in to defuse tensions

Iranian lawmakers seeking to impeach President Hassan Rouhani have backed away from the initiative, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

The agency cited a member of the Majlis -- the Iranian Parliament -- as saying that the motion to impeach the besieged president was dropped after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In Sunday's address to the Parliament, Iran's supreme leader urged unity between the executive and legislative branches.

According to Reutersthe push for the impeachment was spearheaded by a group of 10 hardline conservative lawmakers, who sought to rally more allies around the motion. Read more at i24
