Tax-free week started Sunday, just in time for back-to-school shopping.

Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot promoted the weeklong shopping initiative Thursday at a family-owned Baltimore school store.

Tax-free week begins Sunday and runs through next Saturday, which means there will be no state sales tax on clothing and shoes under $100.

It's not only great news for shoppers, but also for business owners.

"This week coming up, I think, will be the most busiest, most trafficked weeks in the shopping season, and it gets people back into shopping, even during the dog days of August," Franchot said.

The Maryland Retailers Association is also sponsoring a scholarship contest for any student at a college, university or trade school.
