Dear Friends:

I am writing to urge you to call Senator Chris Van Hollen today.  His office can be reached at 202-224-4654.  The message we should be conveying is the following:

"I am calling to congratulate our Senator on his election, and to urge him to begin his term in the Senate by demonstrating leadership and cosponsoring the Rubio-Cardin resolution (S.Res.6) that puts Congress on record expressing opposition to U.N. Security Council Resolution 2334."

The background to this is the Obama administration's failure to veto UNSC Resolution 2334.  In allowing this counterproductive measure to pass, the administration broke with long-standing US policy to veto anti-Israel resolutions at the UN and to reject any efforts to impose solutions to the conflict from the outside.

The Senate is preparing to take bipartisan action in opposition to this anti-Israel U.N. Security Council (UNSC) resolution passed Dec. 23.  Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Royce-Engel bipartisan resolution that expressed opposition to UNSC Res. 2334 in an overwhelming 342-80 vote.  All eight Maryland House members voted in favor.

On Jan. 4, a similar resolution was introduced in the Senate by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and our own Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD). With over 60 senate cosponsors, this resolution (S.Res.6) expresses opposition to UNSC Resolution 2334 and to all efforts that undermine direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. It also calls for the United States to oppose all attempts at international organizations—including the U.N.—to isolate or sanction Israel.

I urge you to call now.  Our Senator should hear from us that we expect him to lead on issues of such importance to both the United States and Israel.  He should see that this is a priority for our community.

We hope and pray that G-d will provide safety and security for our world, for the United States of America, and for Israel.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Moshe Hauer
