Jerusalem, Israel - Aug. 14, 2016 - Tisha B'Av night in Yerushalyim, commemorated Motzei Shabbas, saw tens of thousands of people arrive to The Old City, many to sit all night in mourning. Eicah was recited inside shuls and on the grounds outside, even on public walkways along the Taylet, the Haas Promenade.
Numbers seemed down for annual Eicah reading in Gan Haatzmaut, sponsored by Women in Green. However, as the group walked around the Walls of the Old City for the 22nd year, the crowd seemed to grow. Security was heightened throughout The Old City area with hundreds of extra police and streets blocked.
Led by Nadia Matar and Yehudit Katsover, with comments by tour guide Arieh Klein, the group stopped at Lion's Gate for speeches.
After greetings from Deputy Mayor, Dov Kalmanovitz, former MK Professot Arieh Eldad spoke. Another annual participant, Yosef Mendelovitch, recited kaddish at the end of his remarks.
Deputy Defense Minister Rabbi Eli Ben Dahan and MK Yehuda Glick concluded the program.
Along the road to the Kosel, groups of all sizes were sitting, some in silence, others in discussion.
At midnight, the plaza was filling, as hundreds more people arrived. Circles of young men, as has become the custom, were singing slow songs of Yerushalyim and the coming of Moshiach.
In Yerushaylim, mourners sat on the stones of the destruction, remembered the tragedies of Tisha B'Av and pray for the future.
