On the eve of July fourth, Gush Etzion Foundation and Matnas of Gush Etzion, with sponsors AACI, Hub Etzion and Blue Thread Marketing, held a red, white and blue event called Gush Night America.

The Matnas is located near Alon Shvut in Gush Etzion. Participants, mostly olim and former Americans, came from surrounding communities, including Efrat, Elazer, and Kfar Etzion to enjoy hot dogs and fries, fresh popcorn, and decorated donuts in celebration of the US Independence Day.

A local youth band, "Volume", provided entertainment, singing and playing. Special guest speaker MK Michael Oren, former Ambassador to the United States, was late. He was paying a shiva call to the Ariel family in near by Kiryat Arba.

Dan Diker of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs served as moderator of  the US presidential debate which followed. Mark Zell, born in DC, received his law degree at University of Maryland Baltimore, practiced law in Maryland before making aliyah, and is chair of Republicans Overseas Israel. Zell  debated against Hillel Schenker of Democrats Abroad, with Brig. Gen. Yossi Kupperwasser, also participating. 

As the debate, proceeded people hovered around Michael Oren who was signing copies of his books. Book after book, he smiled, listened and wrote, as more volumes were piled high on the tables.

Yoni Riskin, Shani Abrams Simkovitz and the Gush Etzion Regional Council were in charge of arrangements. IVoteIsrael provided information for those wanting to vote in the upcoming US presidential election. The debate was streamed live on Facebook. This was the first debate, with more planned in other communities before election time.
