Jerusalem, Israel - May 13, 2016 - Gan Sacher, the bit of open green space in Jerusalem, Israel, is a traditional gathering place for extended families to meet on holidays. On Yom Haatzmaut, Israel Independence Day, dozens of families and thousands of people came to grill food and celebrate a day off from work in honor of Israeli's 68th year.
One of the annual gatherings is sponsored by the Lone Soldier Center in memory of Michael Levin. The MegaMangal, mangal is what Israelis call a BBQ. I added the Mega, as this was a huge event. Hundreds of people, lone soldiers and volunteers, and new this year, Bat Sherut girls with families overseas who are doing voluntary national service, attended and enjoyed. Also, new this year, many more babies. Lone soldiers have become volunteers, marry and are starting families. This once a year event keeps getting bigger and better. Even the IAF attended with a fly over.
Among the many smiling faces in the photo essay are Phil and Hanna Sara Katz, just back to Israel after being in Baltimore for Pesach.
