Jerusalem - A 17-year-old Gazan who has served in the Hamas Military Wing for two years, including in the tunnel project, has been arrested and indicted in an Israeli court. The Shin Bet cleared for publication that he was arrested on April 6 after illegally crossing into Israel. He was indicted on Tuesday at the Beer Sheva District Court.

An investigation revealed that he was recruited shortly before Operation Protective Edge in 2014 and underwent several military courses. He took part in various activities including in ambushes against IDF forces and in the digging of tunnels towards Israel. Most of his training was focused on offense, such as infiltration, entry to buildings, and blowing up explosives. The Shin Bet said in a statement that this was “part of an expectation that the next war would be held inside Israel.”

The suspect shared comprehensive information with interrogators concerning Hamas’s efforts to dig attack tunnels into Israel, the location of many tunnel shafts in Gaza, and the routes of tunnels meant to be used by the organization’s elite unit in a time of emergency.

The Shin Bet learned details of the diggers’ techniques, tools, and work procedures. “For example, they are not permitted to exit the tunnel in their work attire or before they shower and change their clothes inside the tunnel in an attempt to camouflage their activity,” said the Shin Bet statement.

The minor also participated in the placement of explosives in and around tunnels in case they would be infiltrated by IDF forces and they even stored additional bombs at his home in Jabaliya.

Although Hamas is aware of and monitors Israeli efforts to locate the tunnels, the suspect told the interrogators that the terror organization is continuing to dig tunnels anyway.

According to the Shin Bet, the minor is just one of many terror operatives currently being interrogated, revealing up-to-date inside information on the intensive Hamas tunnel project.

The 17-year-old was indicted of six charges, including membership of an unlawful association, conspiring to murder and kidnap, attempted murder, and giving information to the enemy with the intention to harm national security.
