BaltimoreJewishLife.com (BJL) is proud to partner with STAR-K CERTIFICATION that realizes that there is no substitute for a person’s own Rav. In an effort to offer a possible solution, it has launched its Institute of Halachah as a public service. Over the years, the agency’s Kashrus Hotline has answered generic halachic questions from kosher consumers the world over, including inquiries regarding the kosher status of foods and certified Sabbath mode appliances. The formation of a separate official division within STAR-K testifies to the need for addressing these issues.
The Institute of Halachah is directed by HaRav Mordechai Frankel, under the guidance of HaRav Moshe Heinemann, STAR-K’s Rabbinic Administrator. It is an invaluable resource for a diverse array of rabbis to discuss general halachic matters, as well as gain access to source materials for shiurim and answers to congregants’ questions.

During the Second Temple, the Greek empire reigned (over Israel),1 and they (the Greeks) passed decrees against the Jews and (tried) to erase their religion, and did not allow them to carry out Torah (study) or the commandments. They put their hands on their property and their daughters. They entered the Temple, destroyed and made the pure unclean. The Jews were in great distress because of them and were much oppressed, until the G-d of their fathers had mercy on them, delivering them from their hands and saving them. Then overcame, the sons of the Hasmonean High Priest, (the Greeks) and killed them and saved the Jews from their hands. They appointed a king from the Priests, and the kingdom of Israel was restored for more than 200 years until the destruction of (the) second (Temple). When the Jews overcame their enemies and destroyed them, it was the 25th of Kislev2 when they entered the Sanctuary (inner room) and did not find pure (olive) oil in the Temple, except one jar sealed with seal of the High Priest, and it did not contain enough to light except for one day only. But they lit from it the lamps of the Menorah3 for eight days, until they could crush olives and produce a (new quantity) of pure oil. For these reasons, decreed the Sages of that generation that these eight days that begin on the 25th Kislev, will be days of joy and praise. One lights on them lamps at evening at the entrance to the houses, every evening of the eight nights to show off and demonstrate the miracle. These days are called ''Hanukah'' that is to say ''they rested'' (chanu) on the ''25'' ('th of the month) because on the 25th they rested from their enemies. and also because of those days they (re)-dedicated the house (Temple) which their foes had defiled. Also some say that it is a commandment to increase slightly the festive meals on Hanukah. Another reason is because the work of (building) the Sanctuary (in the desert) was completed in these days. One should tell one's children the story of the miracles that were done for our fore-fathers in those days, (see Josephus) However, these meals are not considered as part of the commandment unless one says at the meal songs of praise. One should increase charity in these Hanukah days, for this can help mend any defects in our souls. This charity, should be given particularly to poor Torah scholars. (KSA 139:1) 1) 352 BCE until 70 CE 2) 139 BCE 3) The Menorah was made of gold and had seven branches.
Jerusalem, Israel - Sept. 16, 2025 - In keeping with tradition ahead of the High Holidays, the Western Wall Heritage Foundation today (Tuesday) carried out the semi-annual removal of kvitlach that had been placed between the stones of the Western Wall over the past six months. In a move that underscores the deepening chasm between the Spanish government and the State of Israel, Madrid has formally cancelled a lucrative contract for Israeli-designed rocket launchers, AFP reported on Monday.
This decision, valued at nearly 700 million euros, was formalized on Spain’s official public contracts platform on September 9, just a day before Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez publicly unveiled a decree to "consolidate in law" a ban on military equipment sales and purchases with Israel, the news agency said.
The cancelled contract involved the acquisition of 12 SILAM rocket launcher systems, which are a variant of the PULS platform developed by Israeli firm Elbit Systems. This information was confirmed by the International Institute for Strategic Studies&rsquo...
The IDF on Monday evening began the ground stage of Operation Gideon's Chariots II, with the 98th and 162nd Regular Divisions entering the heart of Gaza City.
IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and Southern Command Commanding Officer Maj. Gen. Yaniv Asor is with the troops in the field.
According to the battle plan, the 36th Division will also gradually join the fighting over the coming days, and together with other divisions, they will surround the city. So far, the IDF controls 40% of the city.
The IDF clarified that its mode of operation is based on a gradual entry, accompanied by massive air cover, while prioritizing the safety of its troops over the speed of their advance.
The military added that "IAF aircraft are striking many targets, including Hamas control centers and combat p...
Baltimore, MD - Sept. 15, 2022 - For a fourth year in a row, Maryland recorded an increase in reported medical mistakes, including some that were fatal, the state’s Department of Health said in its annual patient safety report.
The continued rise in reports of adverse events — medical mistakes leading to complications in treatment — is an “after effect of the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to the Maryland Hospital Patient Safety Program’s annual report for the 2023 fiscal year.
The pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in the health care system, including staffing shortages, high patient acuity and supply chain disruptions, which continue to contribute to errors, the report said.
Over 80% of these errors in Fiscal Year 2023 were classified as Level 1 events...
Baltimore, MD - Sept. 15, 2025 - A sense of fear has enveloped Baltimore's Inner Harbor following two violent incidents over the weekend. An 18-year-old was shot after an argument, and a 17-year-old was robbed in the bustling tourist area.
"You hear that something that happens just last night, it’s a little bit scary, I’m not going to lie," a concerned resident said.
Despite these incidents, city officials, including the mayor and governor, have stated that crime in Baltimore is on the decline and have dismissed the idea of deploying the National Guard. However, some residents disagree.
"I think the National Guard would be very much called for, because it prevents more danger," said one resident.
In Washington, D.C., where the National Guard has been deployed in ...
Baltimore, MD - Sept. 15, 2025 - A Fox45 News investigation has uncovered yet another stunning failure in Baltimore City Public Schools when it comes to academic outcomes.
Despite a dramatic increase in funding, Project Baltimore found one City high school that has not had a single student test proficient in math in four years.
Carl Stokes, a former Baltimore City Council member and charter school operator, responded: “They do a horrible job. That school should be closed.”
Achievement Academy at Harbor City, a high school in northeast Baltimore, has not had a single student test proficient in math in four years, according to MCAP state exam data. Over the last four school years, 134 students at the school have taken the state math exams. Not one scored proficient.

Qatar is spearheading an effort by a number of countries to impose a blockade on Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told The Jerusalem Post on Monday.
"There is currently an attempt to impose a blockade on Israel by various entities and countries, led by Qatar," the prime minister said. "This includes, first and foremost, a media blockade funded by vast sums of money from Qatar and other countries, such as China."
"In the coming years, we will need to strengthen our independent arms industries to ensure self-reliance in weaponry, munitions production, and industrial capacity. This will enable us to break through this blockade," he added.
Netanyahu continued, saying that the isolation attempts would not be successful.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu admitted today (Monday) to the influence of diplomatic isolation on Israel’s arms industry during the Ministry of Finance’s Accountant General conference.
“This changes Israel’s international situation, both in terms of our ability to import weapons components and ammunition, and it threatens us with the seeds of economic sanctions. This is a fact, and it is very difficult to influence,” Netanyahu said.
He added: “We will increasingly need to adapt to an economy with autarkic characteristics (without foreign trade). That is the word I hate the most. I am a supporter of the free market, but we could find ourselves in a situation where our arms industries are blocked.
We will need to develop arms industries here—n...
