Jerusalem, Israel - Mar. 31, 2016 - On Sunday evening, March 13th, the Rabbinical Council of America-Israel Region, RCA Israel sponsored the documentary film, The Prime Ministers: Soldiers and Peacemakers, at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem, Israel. Rabbi Raymond Apple, new RCA Israel president, made opening remarks of welcome to the full-house audience. The film, a follow up to The Prime Ministers: The Pioneers, shares the life and experiences of the late Ambassador Yehuda Avner, z"l. Not only the years he worked for Israeli Prime Ministers Yitzchak Rabin and Menachem Begin, but Avner's experiences starting in 1947, when he left England to live in Palestine are fascinating.
Yehuda Avner, had a long, rich and distinguished career, his book, The Prime Ministers, was a bestseller. The movie was enjoyed, not only for its content, but his insider's account of the development of the State of Israel. Many in the audience knew the former Ambassador, speech writer, public servant and raconteur. His stories, no matter how many times you heard them, always entertained.
Avner was still in fine form when he sat to be interviewed for the film. Seeing a story with Menachem Begin a central figure in the Menachem Begin Center auditorium, added to the evening. Having a friendship with the Avners, since his posting as Ambassador to Australia, even more meaningful. It was nice to once again hear Yehuda Avner's voice, but sad we will never be able to see the twinkle in his eyes again as he retells a funny story.
