Jerusalem, Israel - Mar. 28, 2016 - Purim. Every year people are looking for a new angle, a new Purim costume, a new idea for mishloach manos or for their seuda.
The Bible Lands Museum Jerusalem held an opening event before Purim to celebrate a new initiative, Community Curates, with its first exhibit, "Behind the Mask." Community Curates is a new effort to engage and involve the public. A call went out for collectors to share their favorite masks for the BLMJ exhibit for Purim.
The evening was moderated by Museum Director Amanda Weiss. Student musicians, a short talk about the history of costumes and masks in Purim celebrations, and an actor's interpretation using a mask were part of the program.
According to BLMJ Education Department Director, Dr. Edith Kimchi, "The mask is not an external cover that creates a baseless illusion; rather is is an expression of our inner self."
The collection includes Tanzanian Masks from East Africa, a Moshe Dayan Purim Mask from the 1960s, and a Darth Vadar Mask from Star Wars movie series.
As every year, Jerusalem museums hold special events, with free admission for children, on the afternoon of Purim and Shushan Purim.
