Jerusalem, Israel - March 18, 2016 - Mayor Nir Barkat welcomed international press, elite runners and special guests to Jerusalem, Israel for the running of the sixth International Jerusalem Marathon on Thursday morning. From the roof top of Notre Dame, the Old City was in view below. Weather conditions changed by the minute, with rain and sunny breaks in the clouds, but did not dampen the excitement.

Director General of the Tourism Ministry, Amir Halevy, and Director of Tourism of the Jerusalem Development Authority, Ilanit Melchior, also welcomed the guests. Melchior mentioned how registration for this marathon increased using social media. 

A select group of international bloggers were invited to events surrounding the running of the marathon. Enjoying Jerusalem tourist hot spots, and spreading their good impressions, is seen as a way to increase tourism. For this running event, there is a full marathon, half'marathon, 10K race and shorter family and "community" races, with over 26,000 participants. 2,500 of those registered are from out of Israel, from Brazil to China, with the top runners from Kenya and Ethiopia.

The mayor, who is a marathon runner, and a few of the athletes did a short warm up run near Jaffa Gate. The route for Friday events, start near the Knesset Building, and go around Givat Ram Hebrew University Campus, through neighborhoods and the Old City, ending in Gan Sacher.

Main roads in Jerusalem will be closed until Friday afternoon. Some schools, businesses, even the Israel Museum will not open on Friday. Shabbat shopping and preparations will be limited. 

The Jerusalem Marathon has grown every year. Dozens of organizations have groups raising large sums of money for worthwhile charities, As one woman from London, said today, "Before I came I was afraid, but now that I came once to Jerusalem, I love it and want to come back every year."
