Jerusalem - A female terrorist attempted to stab Israeli Border Police officers in Jerusalem’s Old City on Tuesday morning. The terrorist was shot dead by security forces and there were no injuries in the attack.
The attempted attack occurred on Haguy street. The suspect, in her fifties, was a resident of east Jerusalem.
The Police said in a statement that as they were preparing for general patrol duties in the city, the suspect approached the Border Police officers, pulled out a knife and tried to stab them with it.
The officers, who felt that they were in immediate danger, reacted quickly and professionally and shot the suspect, according to the police.
Police officers who arrived at the scene following the attempted stabbing gave medical treatment to the suspect who was pronounced dead shortly after.
On Monday night, Border Police officers arrested a Palestinian woman at a West Bank checkpoint for possession of a knife and suspicion of intent to carry out a stabbing attack against officers on site.
Under initial investigation, the suspect admitted that she intended to carry out a terror attack against security forces, police said.
It was the latest in over five months of Palestinian attacks that have killed 28 Israelis. At least 172 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire during that time. Most of them were attackers and the rest were killed in clashes, Israel says.
Palestinians say the violence stems from frustration at nearly five decades of Israeli rule over the West Bank and east Jerusalem. Israel says the violence is fueled by Palestinian incitement.
Also Tuesday, Israeli security forces sealed shut the West Bank home of a Palestinian who killed an Israeli border policeman in a November car-ramming attack in the West Bank. Israel says home sealing and demolitions are an effective tool to deter attacks. Critics say the tactic amounts to collective punishment.
