Israel - The government on Sunday approved a pay raise for IDF soldiers which is set to go into affect in January.

Soldiers’ monthly wages were set to be raised by 50 percent as part of the agreement.

Combat soldiers will see their pay rise from NIS 1,080 per month to NIS 1,620 per month. Soldiers in combat support roles will be raised from NIS 780 per month to NIS 1,170 per month. Soldiers who serve on the homefront will see their salaries raised from NIS 540 per month to NIS 810 per month.

The raises were agreed upon in budget talks between the Treasury and the Defense Ministry and were finalized with the cabinet’s approval on Sunday morning.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the beginning of Sunday’s cabinet meeting that “on the eve of Hanukka, there is no better time to bring the initiative to raise the salary of conscripted soldiers. At the end of the day, we survive on the defense abilities of the IDF soldiers, and I am glad that we are in agreement - the finance minister, the defense minister and the prime minister.”

Netanyahu called the move to raise the soldiers’ salaries “a step that is needed, just and correct,” adding that “there can be no better gift for the eve of Hanukka.”
