Jerusalem - Following a five month vacancy, former Shin Bet deputy director Roni Alsheikh was officially sworn in as Israel’s new police commissioner during a brief ceremony at the Prime Minister’s office on Thursday.

The appointment of Alsheikh, who was sworn in by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Minister of Public Security Gilad Erdan, ended an extended vacancy that was wrought with controversy following the exit of previous commissioner Yohanan Danino.

Prime Minister Netanyahu and Minister Erdan’s original nomination, IDF Brig.-Gen. Gal Hirsch, was withdrawn after the attorney general withdrew his support amid objections raised by the High Court.

Alsheikh, who appeared at the ceremony on crutches, used levity in addressing the public with regard to his commitment, saying, ““A short while ago I was sworn in, in a humble ceremony. The crutches aren’t part of the protocol, but the Almighty made sure that my left leg would break, so as to insure that I’d enter the office on the right foot.”
