Baltimore, MD - Oct. 23 - The Baltimore Sephardic Community sponsored a Hesped for Maran HaRav HaGaon Chacham Ovadiah Yosef, ZT'L,   Monday evening, Oct. 14, at Ohr HaMizrach Congregation.

Hundreds of people attended, including Rabbanim of many of the Mosdos in Baltimore.

Rabbi Reuben Arieh, Marah De'atra welcomed everyone, and spoke of the greatness of Chacham Ovadia, and how a Torah education, especially for our children was one of his main goals.

He suggested that we strengthen our own commitment in Torah learning as well as seeing to it that our children receive that best Torah education possible.

The Rosh Yeshiva, Harav Aharon Feldman, shlita, then addressed the gathering, focusing on Chacham Ovadia's tremendous hasmada in Torah learning, and how that was the focus of his life.

Rabbi David Ozeri, who made the trip from New York to be able to speak at the event, shared of how he first met Rav Ovadia when he was a young Yeshiva student in Brooklyn. After hearing him speak at a local Yeshiva, he was so inspired, that he followed him around for the rest of his visit in New York. Rabbi Ozeri went on to relate numerous first hand stories about Rav Ovadia, describing his love of Torah and his love for every Jew. Rabbi Ozeri became a close talmid of Chacham Ovadia and visited him many times in Israel. He was considered a ben bayit in his home, and he knew the extended Yosef family quite well.

Rabbi Moshe Heinemann focused on how Rav Ovadia was able to connect especially with Sephardic Jews throughout Eretz Yisrael and the world, and he succeeded in uplifting them and bringing them together creating a powerful movement that went on to revitalize their communities.

Rabbi Emanuel Goldfeiz shared the fact that Chacham Ovadia, despite all of his greatness, was able to look at every Jew and see the potential that they had; he wanted "no Jew to be left behind". He was an extremely humble person, which allowed him to reach over many lines and connect with so many people no matter what their background or level of observance.
