Israeli security forces have foiled an alleged major terror attack planned in Jerusalem’s Old City and arrested a 19-year-old resident of Beit Hanina, the Shin Bet and Israel Police announced.

According to investigators, the suspect had spent approximately two years preparing a multi-stage attack. He allegedly planned to detonate an explosive device at Lions’ Gate before making his way onto Har HaBayis and opening fire on Jewish civilians and police officers. Investigators said his goal was to kill as many people as possible before escaping.

The suspect allegedly used his trips to Friday prayers to study the area, including the locations of security cameras and the deployment of security forces. He also searched the dark web for a weapon.

In recent months, he reportedly began training in martial arts so he could continue attacking people with his bare hands if the original plan failed.

During questioning, the suspect admitted to the plan and said he decided to carry out the attack after watching footage of the October 7 massacre. People who knew him also provided statements that implicated him.

A serious indictment was filed against the suspect in recent days.
