Karthikeyan Deenadayalan, chief engineer of the Dali cargo ship involved in the deadly 2024 Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse, was prevented from boarding a flight from India to Baltimore earlier this week by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Deenadayalan had been visiting family in India, and his attorneys said the reason for the travel restriction has not been made public.

Deenadayalan entered into a deferred prosecution agreement in June 2026 over his role in the case. The Dali lost power and struck the Key Bridge on March 26, 2024, killing six construction workers and closing the Port of Baltimore’s main shipping channel for weeks.

According to the Justice Department, Deenadayalan admitted that he knew the ship was using an unsafe fuel supply pump and failed to notify the U.S. Coast Guard of the hazardous condition. Under the agreement, he must comply with specified conditions, which may include cooperating in the separate criminal case against another Dali employee.

His attorneys said he is ready to return to the United States once the travel issue is resolved.
