A National Guard member was shot late Sunday night in Washington, D.C., after attempting to break up a fight near Capitol Hill. The suspect was also wounded in an exchange of gunfire, according to police.

D.C. Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said seven or eight National Guard members were traveling in a van when they spotted the fight in the Eastern Market neighborhood shortly after 11 p.m. and got out to intervene.

During the confrontation, one person involved in the fight pulled out a gun and began firing. When the suspect pointed the weapon toward the Guard members, three of them returned fire, police said. One Guardsman was struck in the leg, while the suspect was hit in the abdomen.

Both were taken to area hospitals with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The suspect was taken into custody, and police said there was no ongoing threat to the public. The shooting remains under investigation.
