Baltimore, MD – October 7, 2026 -
Nearly 1,000 people packed Goucher College’s Kraushaar Auditorium on Chol Hamoed for a Miriam’s Library concert featuring Joey Newcomb, as the organization announced the launch of a new hands-on after-school program and an $18,000 scholarship fund for participating families.

The concert featured Newcomb together with Baltimore’s 8th Note Band, led by Menachem Manevich, and marked the public rollout of the first programming at Miriam’s Library’s new Pikesville home.

A New Kind of After-School Program

The new six-week program, beginning October 25, is geared toward fourth- and fifth-graders and takes a different approach from the traditional after-school model. Rather than centering on homework help or classroom-style enrichment, the program is built around practical, creative, and skill-based activities designed to give children opportunities to discover interests they may not encounter during the regular school day.

The first slate of classes includes 3D printing and design, guitar fundamentals, mosaic art, screen printing, baking and decorating, and hairstyling and braiding. Girls’ classes will be held on Sundays, while boys’ classes will take place on weekday afternoons.

The launch represents what organizers hope will become a broader model of hands-on after-school programming for Baltimore’s Jewish community, with children learning directly from instructors in areas ranging from technology and music to art and practical skills.

A video shown during the evening introduced several of the instructors who will lead the first classes and gave families a preview of what the new program will offer.

$18,000 Scholarship Fund Announced

During the concert, Miriam’s Library also announced the creation of an $18,000 scholarship fund, made possible by the Ben and Zelda Cohen Foundation, to help ensure that cost does not prevent families from participating in the new programming.

Transportation from school will also be available, and financial assistance is being offered to families who need it.

Democratic nominee for Baltimore County Council District 4 Karson Kamenetz also addressed the crowd, offering greetings and recognizing the launch of Miriam’s Library’s new programming.

A New Chapter for Miriam’s Library

Miriam’s Library was established in memory of Miriam Mintz following her passing in August 2024. The organization later acquired an approximately 14,000-square-foot building at 201 Milford Mill Road in Pikesville for roughly $2.3 million, following a community fundraising campaign supported by more than 4,000 donors.

Renovations have been underway at the property, but rather than waiting for the entire building project to be completed, Miriam’s Library is beginning programming in phases. The new after-school initiative will be among the first regular programs to operate from the center.

Additional classes and activities are expected to be added as the program develops and more of the building comes online.

Registration for the first six-week session is now open. More information and registration are available at MiriamsLibrary.com.
