Hamas official Ghazi Hamad said Monday that Ali al-Amoudi, the terror group’s de facto leader in Gaza, survived an Israeli attempt to eliminate him in a strike several days ago.

The Israeli strike took place Saturday in Gaza and targeted al-Amoudi, whom the IDF has described as the most senior Hamas figure remaining in the Gaza Strip. The military said following the strike that its results were under review.

Al-Amoudi was not reported among those killed, and Hamas officials have now said that he survived the attempted assassination.

Al-Amoudi was a close associate of Yahya Sinwar and served as head of Sinwar’s office. He was released from an Israeli prison in the 2011 Gilad Schalit prisoner exchange after serving nearly 20 years and later joined Hamas’s political bureau. Following Sinwar’s death, al-Amoudi emerged as Hamas’s de facto leader in Gaza and formally assumed the position in July.

The IDF has accused al-Amoudi of involvement in multiple terror attacks, including the October 7 massacre.
