Baltimore, MD - July 27, 2027 - Throughout the school year, Jewish Educational Services regularly convenes Early Childhood Directors from across the community, creating opportunities for collaboration, problem-solving, and shared learning. This summer, they built on those connections by hosting their very first Early Childhood Directors' Retreat, a special day designed to recognize and celebrate the incredible work these professionals do every day.
The retreat brought together 22 participants representing 15 early childhood programs, nearly every Jewish early childhood program in our community. While each school has its own culture, philosophy, and unique needs, the day revealed just how much these leaders have in common.
To facilitate the retreat, JES partnered with Miriam Stein of Saddlerock Strategies, who led participants through engaging conversations about leadership, workplace challenges, time management, staff development, and the often-unseen work that comes with leading a school.
While the retreat offered plenty of practical takeaways, the most powerful feedback centered on something much simpler: connection.
Repeatedly, directors shared how meaningful it was to realize that the challenges they face are often shared by their colleagues. One participant wrote, "The biggest insight from today is to know we all are feeling the same struggles. We are not alone." Another reflected that she was amazed to discover that most directors are navigating similar issues and appreciated knowing she now has peers she can turn to for support.
From collaborative discussions and problem-solving activities to a reflective walk-and-talk and creative art experience, the day gave leaders a rare opportunity to step away from the demands of their programs and invest in themselves. Participants left with practical strategies, fresh ideas, and renewed energy for the year ahead.
As directors prepare to welcome children, families, and staff back for a new school year, many shared goals focused on strengthening teacher support, building stronger partnerships with families, developing positive school cultures, and creating opportunities for professional growth within their teams.
JES knows that strong schools begin with strong leaders. This retreat was a way of expressing gratitude to the dedicated professionals who work tirelessly on behalf of our community's youngest learners. More than just a day of professional development, it was a celebration of leadership, a chance to build deeper relationships across programs, and a reminder that even in diverse settings, we are stronger when we learn and grow together.
