Baltimore, MD - Nov. 29, 2025 -  A $20 bowl from outside Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley’s home this month is just one of millions of packages swiped across the metro region this year — helping propel the area to the nation’s fifth-worst hotspot for porch theft, according to a new report.

The city rocketed from 67th place last year to No. 5 in 2025, a staggering rise driven by an estimated 3.857 million stolen packages worth nearly $160 million, security research group SafeWise reported. However, there is a disclaimer with that data. The numbers include the entire Baltimore metro area, encompassing places like Towson and Baltimore, Carroll and Howard counties.

The Baltimore metro area also recorded one of the highest per-capita porch theft rates in the country this year, at 3,416 incidents per 1,000 households.

The surge stands out in a year when national package theft rates dipped for the first time since SafeWise began tracking the trend. Other major cities saw sharp drops in package theft — the estimated value for the New York City metro area fell from nearly $1 billion to about $248 million.
