New York, NY - May 28, 2025 - The decision by the Beechnut Baby Foods Company to remove its certification by the Orthodox Union (OU) is extremely disturbing and offensive to the large kosher community in the US. In a statement, Menachem Lubinsky, the leading authority on kosher food in the US,  called Beechnut’s decision extremely shortsighted. He said that Beechnut was amongst the less than 1% of food companies who opted to terminate their kosher certification in the past decade. Many companies who eliminated kosher faced enormous backlash and reverted to their kosher certification.

Lubinsky, the founder of Kosherfest, the leading international kosher food show that he founded more than 36 years ago is also the editor of Kosher Today, the industry publication which is currently a popular podcast. He said that Beechnut had either not done its homework on the demographics and growth of kosher consumers nationwide or failed to market their baby foods to a community that has an above average birth rate and large families.

“Thankfully more food companies are recognizing the value of a kosher symbol which in recent years has raised the number of kosher certified products to well over 400,000 with an additional 350,000 ingredient items.” While Beechnut has undoubtedly faced competition from other companies including many by Orthodox Jewish companies, its brand is well known and perhaps should have developed a distinct marketing strategy for a community where upward of 10 children in a family is common.

The Orthodox Union said that its leadership had made an attempt to reverse the decision but to no avail. With several hundred kosher stores around the nation and with nearly 75 kosher supermarkets of more than 15,000 square feet, the Beechnut line is likely to disappear from both chain and independent supermarkets.  More than 1.2 million people consume kosher regularly with as many as 3.5 million others consuming kosher intermittently. The kosher market is valued at over $12 billion in annual sales.

Lubinsky urged Beechnut officials to reverse their decision and return the kosher symbol to its products as soon as possible.
