Jerusalem, Israel - May 2, 2025  - The annual Israeli Independence Day International Bible Quiz for Youth took place on Thursday at the Jerusalem Theater. The event was broadcast live throughout Israel. The prestigious competition drew students from Israel, the United States, South Africa, Mexico, Canada, Panama, and Venezuela.

Elad Yanir of Petah Tikva won first place, while Ilan Romm from the United States earned second place overall and was awarded top honors among Diaspora participants.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana, Education Minister Yoav Kisch, Education Ministry Director General Meir Shimoni, and Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion were among the dignitaries who attended the event.

Ilan Romm, a senior at Yeshivat Frisch in Paramus, New Jersey, became the first non-Israeli in over five years to reach the final head-to-head round. He previously won the U.S. national Bible Quiz and is the son of Gadi and Jana Romm of White Plains, New York.

Romm plans to study at Yeshivat Har Etzion before entering the honors engineering program at the University of Maryland. His close friend Eytan Rosenstock, who placed seventh in the international competition, plans to attend both institutions as well.

Romm has strong ties to Maryland. His great-grandparents, Al and Lee Woodrow, lived in Pikesville and Owings Mills and were members of Chizuk Emunah Synagogue. His grandmother, Diane Romm, is a long-distance member of the Baltimore Zionist District and regularly attends its weekly virtual events.

Ariela Mannes from Olney, Maryland, impressed the audience with her poise and fluent Hebrew, placing sixth. Other American participants included Joshua Jaffe and Eytan Rosenstock.

The camaraderie of the contestants is an important aspect of the International Bible Quiz, as witnessed by the friendship of Ilan Romm with Ariel Meir Benjamin Nahon of Venezuela. The signs and banners from audience supporters are also part of the experience. The Sussman family came from South Africa to support Eliana. Besides a large sign, they wore hats, "Team Sussman."

Notably, three of this year’s contestants had older siblings who were also finalists in previous Bible Quiz competitions.

Following the award ceremony, Prime Minister Netanyahu addressed the audience. The event concluded with the singing of "Hatikva," Israel’s national anthem, followed by a spontaneous rendition of "Ani Ma’amin" by the audience.
