Baltimore, MD - April 2, 2025 - Although the STAR-K Hotline fields inquiries from approximately 5000 worldwide consumers annually between Purim and Pesach, last week STAR-K Certification staff members were invited to break for an hour-long interactive seminar on the mitzvah of Shmiras HaGuf, guarding one’s health.

The seminar, held in the agency’s conference room, was presented by Rabbi Alexander Seinfeld, PhD, who heads Jewish Spiritual Literacy, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing Jewish education, and Dr. Daniel Grove, MD, who is board certified in general internal medicine, critical care, and pulmonology and affiliated with MedStar Health hospitals in the Baltimore-Washington area.

Rabbi Seinfeld opened the seminar with these questions: What are the parameters set by the Torah on shimiras haguf? What is the right balance of bitachon versus hishtadlus when it comes to matters of health? And, practically speaking, are there any small steps I can take that will make a difference today, if I am not ready to make big changes?

The seminar was based on both Torah sources and current medical research documented in their jointly authored book, Body & Soul: The Torah Path to Health, Fitness and a Holy Life. Rabbi Seinfeld quoted teachings from both ancient and contemporary sources, such as Midrash, Gemorah, Rambam, Ravad, Ramban, Ramchal, Rav Yisroel Salanter, Rav Shimshon Rafoel Hirsch, Rav Shlomo Wolbe, and Rav Yaakov Weinberg. Dr. Grove correlated his own research - and that of others in the medical field – with the Torah-based advice presented.

The interconnectedness of physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of wellbeing was highlighted. Practical information and tips included remembering the purpose of food; using high-quality “fuel” for your body; the importance of exercise and sleep; slow and mindful eating; weight loss and longevity; the dangers of being sedentary; and paying as much attention to the ingredient panel on a food product as you would to its hechsher.

One of the greatest takeaways of the seminar, was Dr. Grove’s upbeat message: “The positive message is there is no age or level of conditioning where a person cannot become healthier with lifestyle changes. No one is ever too far gone, ever, until you get to the point where you can’t move anymore.”
