Annapolis, MD - March 6, 2025 - A controversial bill aims to overhaul how tipped workers are paid and taxed in Maryland and increase the minimum wage to $20 an hour by the year 2028.
The groups for and against this bill have been going at it for years.
"What we all know would be simpler, cleaner, better, more effective, and just is a full minimum wage with tips on top," said Saru Jayraman, who leads One Fair Wage.
"How can my boss afford to pay 15 people minimum wage without adding a service charge but adding a service charge to the bill? It only goes to the business; it doesn't go to the server, so basically you'll be working for a check," said Julius Middleton.
The bill changes the wage for tipped workers to minimum wage plus tips; currently it's 3.63 with tips.

Annapolis, MD - March 6, 2025 - As revenue from the fuel tax declines, legislators are grappling with how to fund transportation projects. One proposed solution is to charge drivers by the mile.
Recently, Maryland completed a four-month pilot program to test the feasibility of this approach. Now, a bill is under consideration in the General Assembly that would establish a highway use fee while offering drivers the option to participate in a voluntary Mileage-Based User Fee (MBUF) program.
“This legislation would replace the newly passed EV registration fee, that surcharge, and would also include those vehicles that are considered high efficient vehicles, which is above 25 [miles per gallon],” explained Trish Hendren, the executive director of the Eastern Transportat...
Jerusalem, Israel - March 6, 2025 - In a significant shift for Israel’s electricity market, recent deregulation has ended Chevrat Chashmal’s long-standing monopoly, allowing multiple companies to offer electric service. Consumers now have the opportunity to switch providers and receive substantial discounts, though Chevrat Chashmal continues to manage the power infrastructure itself.
However, Chaim V’Chessed has received numerous reports from non-citizen residents experiencing difficulties in switching providers. It has frequently been challenging for individuals without an Israeli ID number to open accounts with the new providers, leaving this segment of the population unable to benefit from the deregulated market.
In response, Chaim V’Chessed off...

LONDON and TEL AVIV — A Hamas official tells NPR that the United States held direct talks with the Palestinian militant group over the release of several American-Israeli dual citizens taken hostage during the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks in Israel.
The talks, which began as early as January and have continued since, are the first known time the U.S. has engaged directly with Hamas since it designated it a terrorist organization in 1997. It has been a long-standing U.S. policy to not negotiate with groups it designates as terrorists.
The Hamas official did not specify if the January talks took place with officials from the Biden administration or President Trump's incoming administration. Members from both teams were present at ceasefire talks in January before Trump took office. Axio...
US President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to Hamas on Wednesday, after meeting hostages who were freed by the terror group.
Trump demanded that the group release all the remaining hostages immediately, “or it is over for you”.
“‘Shalom Hamas’ means Hello and Goodbye - You can choose. Release all of the Hostages now, not later, and immediately return all of the dead bodies of the people you murdered, or it is OVER for you. Only sick and twisted people keep bodies, and you are sick and twisted!” Trump wrote on his social media channels.
“I am sending Israel everything it needs to finish the job, not a single Hamas member will be safe if you don’t do as I say,” he continued. I have just met with your former Hostages whose ...
US President Donald Trump met on Wednesday with a group of hostages who were recently released by Hamas.
The delegation includes captivity survivors Naama Levy, Doron Steinbrecher, Keith Siegel, Omer Shem Tov, Eli Sharabi and Iair Horn.
“My family and I, myself, we believe you've been sent by God to release us. You can really help. You have the power to do this,” Omer Shem Tov told the President.
Naama Levy added, “You were our hope when you were there, and now you're their hope.”
Trump asked, “So you didn't think, until I came along, you didn't think you were going to get out?”
Levy replied, “No. Once you were elected, we heard that you wanted to do everything to make a deal as soon as possible.”

The "Big Three" automakers are getting a one-month exemption from the Trump administration’s tariffs that went into effect Monday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced Wednesday.
"We spoke with the Big Three automakers," Leavitt confirmed. "We are going to give a one-month exemption on any autos coming through USMCA [United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement].
"Reciprocal tariffs will still go into effect on April 2, but at the request of the companies associated with USMCA, the president is giving them an exemption for one month so they are not at an economic disadvantage," Leavitt said.
She told reporters that Stellantis, Ford and General Motors were the companies Trump spoke with.
"They requested the call. They made the ask a...
Baltimore, MD - March 5, 2025 - Maryland lawmakers are considering a 2.5% sales tax on services between businesses that could generate nearly $1 billion.
The proposal comes as state leaders decide which measures to take to balance the state's budget.
"As we look toward the long-term sustainable funding for things like public safety, education, health care, transportation we need to have a tax system that recognizes the economic reality in the state of Maryland," said Senate President Bill Ferguson.
The Senate President is warning that any more cuts to the budget and we could see major impacts to vulnerable Marylanders.
"We know that we've gotten to a place where the next round of cuts are incredibly dramatic. Kicking up to 100,000 people off medicaid, firing 1,600 teachers so...
