Baltimore, MD  - Feb. 19, 2025 - Leaders from Israel’s Laniado Hospital in Netanya recently visited the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) Shock Trauma Center (STC) as they prepare to build a cutting-edge Sheltered Emergency Hospital designed to enhance emergency medical care and security.

Laniado’s Executive Vice President Meir Mark and Mid-Atlantic Director Chanan Daniel Skurnik toured the renowned trauma center, gaining firsthand insights into its best practices in emergency medicine and patient care.

The visit began in the facility’s advanced Simulation Room, where lifelike medical dummies allow professionals to refine critical emergency procedures. The delegation then explored the Trauma Center, learning about Maryland’s patient transport logistics and established protocols for trauma case management.

Dr. Ronnie Samet, a trauma anesthesiologist, provided an in-depth overview of STC’s trauma treatment system and facility design, while trauma nurse CJ Meyer led a comprehensive tour of the Trauma Bays, offering a close look at daily operations and patient care routines.

The visit was coordinated by Dr. Aaron Rapoport, UMMC head of Hematology Oncology Stem Cell Unit and son of former University of Maryland Medical System president Dr. Mort Rapoport. STC’s Chief Physician, Dr. Thomas M. Scalea, welcomed the delegation and pledged ongoing support for Laniado’s emergency care initiatives.

Further collaboration between the two hospitals is being planned, focusing on the exchange of best practices in emergency medicine. These partnerships not only advance medical expertise but ultimately save lives by improving patient outcomes.

Laniado Hospital is committed to applying these insights in the development of its new Sheltered Emergency Hospital, which will not only ensure state-of-the-art trauma care for Israel’s population but also provide a fortified facility designed to withstand missile attacks and other security threats.
