He Stood Up to Antisemitism and Paid the Price
As antisemitism surges around the world, a familiar pattern in Jewish history reappears: in every generation there are those who turn against the Jewish people, but there are also people who choose to stand with us. One of the most famous examples is Emil Zola, whose name appears on street signs in cities across Israel, including Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Rishon LeZion, Ramle, and Kiryat Ono. Why would Israel name streets after a French novelist who was not Jewish and never even set foot in the country? The answer begins with one of the great dramas of modern European history: the Dreyfus Affair. In 1894, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French army, was falsely accused of passing military secrets to Germany. The evidence against him was weak, but France at the time was dri...

Beyond The Headlines: A Weekly Glimpse Into The Israel You Won’t Read About In The News
Reunited in Gratitude Riki Siton sent me a message about a special gathering held in Ra’anana a couple of weeks ago: a thanksgiving celebration for the passengers of the Flydubai flight who experienced an extraordinary miracle. The event was organized by Bar Kuperstein, who returned from captivity in Gaza, together with his amazing mother, Julie, and Efrat Raz, the widow of Noam Raz, a fighter in Israel’s elite Yamam counterterrorism unit. And where did this moving gathering take place? At the home of Ganya and Shay Tzohar, the aunt and uncle of fallen IDF officer Omer Neutra, who was taken hostage to Gaza. Passengers came from all over Israel to give thanks, reconnect, and recite Birkat HaGomel, the blessing of thanksgiving after surviving danger. Riki described an upl...

FDA Recalls Nearly 3,800 Bottles of Blood Pressure Medication After Pills Fail Quality Tests
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified a nationwide recall of nearly 3,800 bottles of a combination blood pressure medication after testing found that the pills failed to dissolve properly. Macleods Pharma USA, based in New Jersey, is recalling certain lots of Olmesartan Medoxomil, Amlodipine and Hydrochlorothiazide Tablets. The recall was initiated on October 7 and classified by the FDA as a Class II recall on October 26. The recall affects 3,528 bottles containing 30 tablets from lot 12251163A and 216 bottles containing 90 tablets from lot 12251163B. Both lots have an expiration date of May 31, 2027. The FDA cited “failed dissolution specifications” as the reason for the recall. This means the tablets did not dissolve as required during quality testing, poten...

Vance Blames Iran War for Republican Midterm Defeat: “The Reason We Lost Is the War”
Vice President JD Vance directly blamed President Donald Trump’s war with Iran for the Republican Party’s sweeping losses in Tuesday’s midterm elections, saying the conflict was the central reason voters turned against the GOP. “The reason we lost is the war,” Vance wrote, pointing to President Trump’s own acknowledgment the previous night that the conflict contributed to Republican losses. “Everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there.” Vance said Republicans had been warned before the election that they were at risk of losing support among voters who backed Trump and Vance in 2024 but were now considering voting for Democrats. According to Vance, an adviser identified four issues the...

BaltimoreJewishLife.com (BJL) is proud to partner with STAR-K CERTIFICATION that realizes that there is no substitute for a person’s own Rav. In an effort to offer a possible solution, it has launched its Institute of Halachah as a public service. Over the years, the agency’s Kashrus Hotline has answered generic halachic questions from kosher consumers the world over, including inquiries regarding the kosher status of foods and certified Sabbath mode appliances. The formation of a separate official division within STAR-K testifies to the need for addressing these issues.

The Institute of Halachah is directed by HaRav Mordechai Frankel, under the guidance of HaRav Moshe Heinemann, STAR-K’s Rabbinic Administrator. It is an invaluable resource for a diverse array of rabbis to discuss general halachic matters, as well as gain access to source materials for shiurim and answers to congregants’ questions.

Israel Warns U.S. Iran May Be Developing Chemical Weapons Capability
Israel has warned the United States that Iran may be developing the ability to use chemical weapons against Israel and other adversaries. However, U.S. officials are divided over the intelligence and whether Tehran would actually authorize their use. Israeli officials reportedly told their American counterparts that Iran is advancing technology that could allow chemical agents to be deployed on missiles or smuggled into other countries. Some U.S. officials expressed concern, while others questioned the assessment and suggested Israel may be seeking to persuade Washington to resume military operations against Iran. Gulf officials also reportedly questioned the claims, saying Israel had not provided supporting evidence. U.S. intelligence officials reportedly have little disagreement that I...

Hilchos Chanukah

During the Second Temple, the Greek empire reigned (over Israel),1  and they (the Greeks) passed decrees against the Jews and (tried) to erase their religion,  and did not allow them to carry out Torah (study) or the commandments.  They put their hands on their property and their daughters.  They entered the Temple, destroyed and made the pure unclean.  The Jews were in great distress because of them and were much oppressed, until the G-d of their fathers had mercy on them, delivering them from their hands and saving them.  Then overcame, the sons of the Hasmonean High Priest, (the Greeks) and killed them  and saved the Jews from their hands.  They appointed a king from the Priests,  and the kingdom of Israel was restored  for more than 200 years until the destruction of (the) second (Temple).  When the Jews overcame their enemies and destroyed them,  it was the 25th of Kislev2  when they entered the Sanctuary (inner room) and did not find pure (olive) oil in the Temple,  except one jar sealed with seal of the High Priest,  and it did not contain enough to light except for one day only.  But they lit from it the lamps of the Menorah3 for eight days,  until they could crush olives and produce a (new quantity) of pure oil.  For these reasons, decreed the Sages of that generation  that these eight days  that begin on the 25th Kislev, will be days of joy and praise.  One lights on them lamps at evening at the entrance to the houses,  every evening of the eight nights to show off and demonstrate the miracle.  These days are called ''Hanukah''  that is to say ''they rested'' (chanu) on the ''25'' ('th of the month)  because on the 25th they rested from their enemies.  and also because of those days  they (re)-dedicated the house (Temple) which their foes had defiled.  Also some say that it is a commandment to increase slightly the festive meals on Hanukah.  Another reason is because the work of (building) the Sanctuary (in the desert) was completed in these days.  One should tell one's children the story of the miracles  that were done for our fore-fathers in those days,  (see Josephus)  However, these meals are not considered as part of the commandment  unless one says at the meal songs of praise.  One should increase charity in these Hanukah days,  for this can help mend any defects in our souls.  This charity, should be given particularly to poor Torah scholars. (KSA 139:1)

Melania Trump to Host Russian and Ukrainian Representatives at White House for Peace Discussions
First Lady Melania Trump is scheduled to bring Russian and Ukrainian representatives together at the White House on Thursday, November 5, in a diplomatic effort connected to a recent ceasefire and humanitarian evacuation in southern Ukraine. The White House announced Tuesday that Melania will personally host representatives of the two countries, which remain at war. The announcement did not identify the participants or provide details about the meeting’s agenda. The gathering follows a six-day ceasefire in the Ukrainian town of Oleshky, in the Kherson region, which allowed hundreds of civilians to leave the Russian-occupied area. Nearly 800 people reportedly evacuated during the operation after enduring months of severe shortages of food, water and other basic necessities. Accordi...

(Video) After the Blue Wave: What the 2026 Midterms Mean for Israel and the Jewish Community
Baltimore, MD – November 4, 2026 - Democrats swept to control of both the House and Senate on Tuesday. For the Jewish community, the night was mixed: significant victories for Israel's allies, alongside the emergence of a new group of lawmakers sharply critical of Israel. The Headlines Democrats take Congress. Democrats won control of both chambers, reshaping the balance of power in Washington for the final two years of President Trump's term. El-Sayed wins Michigan. Abdul El-Sayed is reported to have won Michigan's Senate race, potentially becoming the first Muslim U.S. senator. A vocal critic of Israel, El-Sayed faced substantial opposition from pro-Israel political groups. A new bloc of Israel critics. Several Democratic Socialist candidates, includi...

Rabbi Zvi Teichman on Parshas Eikev - The Window of Our Soul

Twice daily we recite within the second paragraph of the Shema the verse where G-d commands us לעבדו — to serve Him, בכל לבבכם — with all your heart.

Rashi explains that this 'service of the heart' is תפילה — prayer.

This verb לעבוד — to 'serve' G-d seems to be uniquely applied to fulfilling the obligation to pray, but not generally used in describing our duty regarding other commands.

There is one other area where we use this verb definitively. The service in the Temple with all its associated activities in bringing offerings are termed עבודה — service.

The word עבודה usually conjures up an image of hard work, as indicated in the noun used to describe an עבד — as a slave or servant.

Perhaps in context of the עבודת הקרבנות — the service of offerings, which involves much physically taxing activity we can understand its implication, but in relation to prayer is it truly so difficult?

Rashi, quoting from Sifrei, goes into great deal to discover a source for this notion that serving G-d with all our heart indeed refers to prayer.

First, he cites a verse from Daniel where it reports how the king told him as he was cast into a den of lions — "May your God, Whom you פלח — serve regularly, save you!"(6 17)

Certainly, he wasn't referring to the service of offerings since in Bavel there was no Temple. He was alluding to the service of 'prayer' Daniel engaged in daily as we find in an earlier verse (11) that depicts 'there were open windows [in his upper chamber opposite Jerusalem, and three times a day he [Daniel] kneeled on his knees and prayed.]

Secondly, Rashi quotes an additional verse indicating the notion that prayer is a service akin to offerings and thus considered עבודה, from Tehilim where King David beseeches G-d, "תכון תפלתי — My prayer shall be established, קטרת לפניך — like incense before You." (תהלים קמא ב)

Although Rashi in the name of the Sifrei proves the point nevertheless the question remains, in what way is prayer associated with עבודה — tedious work?

Additionally, when Rashi quotes the verse in Daniel that states explicitly he prayed, Rashi only quotes the segment that portrays the open windows, leaving out the thrust of the verse that states 'he kneeled on his knees and prayed'?

Lastly, the verse regarding King David equates prayer to 'service' in the Temple, but seemingly only emphasizing his desire it be equated to the service of קטרת — Incense.

The prophet Hoshea specifically states how in the absence of a Temple, ונשלמה פרים and let us render [for the absence of] bulls, שפתינו — [the offering of] our lips. (הושע יד ג)

Why then did King David only ask for his prayer to be as the Incense?

The last detail outlined among the various vessels in the Tabernacle was theמזבח הזהב — Golden Altar, where upon the twice — once in the morning and again towards the end of the day — daily offering of קטרת — Incense.

The Midrash says that distinct from all other offerings that were brought to atone for various failings, the Ketores was brought as an expression of joy.

Its goal was to present an exquisite combination of eleven different spices and balm that gave off a most pleasant aroma, an ephemeral intangible element that arouses the sense of smell, associated with our spiritual soul, an expression of G-d's being pleased and happy with us.

The very word קטרת means קשר — knotted, intimating an inextricable bond and connection to His people.

Prayer in its most elemental meaning is a means by which man communicates with G-d conveying acknowledgment of his dependance on His favor, seeking through prayer to request G-d's benevolence in acquiring one's needs.

One of the great Kabbalists, Rav Yehuda Chayat, who was persecuted during the Inquisition and expelled from Spain, describes in his famous commentary Minchas Yehuda, another aspect of prayer.

The word תפילה — prayer, he suggests, is rooted in the word תפל — which means vapid or tasteless, used to describe an item which on its own is useless, who needs others but is bottom of the totem pole in being needed by anyone else.

One who sees himself solely defined by total allegiance to G-d, submitting himself as a vessel to promote כבוד שמים — honor of Heaven, presenting himself before G-d, represents the highest essence of prayer and absolute connection to Him.

When engaged in prayer of request and wishes one is often focused on the issues one is facing and distracted by that reality that makes it difficult to have focus and total intention.

When one can transcend those thoughts by transporting oneself into a super-reality of total submission to G-d and his dictates, one then can experience freedom from anxiety and despair, relishing a connection reminiscent of the inspired and joyous scent of the Ketores in the Temple.

It requires a reframing of our perspective of reality and an absolute reliance on G-d.

Perhaps in the noting of Daniel's prayers in his chamber with 'windows that were facing in the direction of Yerushalayim', was meant to reveal to us the secret of Daniel's survival during his employ in the palace of the evil Nevuchadnezzar.

The Rebbe R' Aharon of Belz quoted in the name of his father, the Rebbe R' Yisachar Dov of Belz, who suggests that Yosef's ability to resist the temptations of Potiphar's wife, through — as the Talmud teaches — his seeing 'a image of his father Yaakov' בחלון — in a window, wasn't some mystical intervention, but Yosef implementing this technique of Tefilla. Yosef elevated himself by visualizing in his mind a panoramic view of 'Yerushalayim', submitting himself as a vessel to the will of G-d, unshackling himself from the chains of illusory desires.

The notion of עבודה that is emphasized is not related to strenuous tasks but rather to a sense of total acquiescence to G-d's will. Like a loyal servant who has no quest for independence, whose total being is devoted to his master's direction and needs.

When the Nazi's invaded Kelm and the entire community was rounded up for their final destination, Rav Doniel Movoshovitz hy'd, was one the great leaders who led them to the killing fields. They marched proudly singing Adon Olam with the Yom Tov niggun. Once they arrived, Rav Doniel requested permission to return to his home for a short while. When he came back, his family asked what he had gone back for, he responded, "We are about to be brought as a korban for Hashem. A sacrifice should have a ריח ניחוח — a satisfying smell, so I went back to brush my teeth for the occasion!"

King David yearned to find that window each time he prayed in search of a portal that possessed the scent of the Ketores that would connect him to G-d.

May we each find that window of our souls that can catapult us beyond the gravity of this world and connect to the Yerushalayim high above, enthusing us with joy even in the face of the most difficult challenges!

באהבה,

צבי יהודה טייכמאן

Hillary Clinton Says Trump Is “Totally Unfettered and Unhinged” and Has Lost Focus on Americans
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton accused President Donald Trump of losing sight of his responsibilities to the American people, calling him “unhinged” and saying he is increasingly focused on projects and tributes to himself. During an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Clinton was asked how Trump has changed since their 2016 presidential race. She said that at the time, Trump had a clearer political strategy and advisers who could push back against his decisions. “Look, I think that he’s lost the plot,” Clinton said. “Back in 2016, ten years ago, think about that, he had a theory of the case. He knew how he wanted to present himself. He had people around him who at least had some ability to rein him in or to say no to him. He’s...

Buzzing with Excitement: Beekeeping Comes to Torah Institute
Baltimore, MD – November 3, 2026 - The first and second graders at Torah Institute / Yeshivas Kochav Yitzchak had a special visitor recently. Mr. Avi Ray came to the Cheder to teach the boys all about beekeeping, and it was a lesson they won't soon forget. Mr. Ray walked the talmidim through the world of the hive. He showed them how bees live and work together, how they make honey, and what a beekeeper does to care for them. The boys listened closely, and many hands went up with questions about everything they were seeing. The visit was one more example of the Cheder's commitment to visual learning. Seeing and experiencing a subject firsthand helps young children understand and remember it far better than hearing about it alone. For the boys, the wonders of Hashem's ...

Eisenkot Rules Out Joining Netanyahu Government Even if Trump Asks, as Three Parties Back Netanyahu
Yashar party chairman Gadi Eisenkot has ruled out joining any government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, even if President Donald Trump personally asks him to, according to a KAN report. "I will not sit in a government led by Netanyahu," Eisenkot said at a recent closed-door meeting, according to KAN, which cited unnamed sources. Eisenkot said he would meet Trump if invited, but would object to American involvement in Israel's internal politics. "If Trump calls me, I will respect the president and come, but I will insist that this is an internal Israeli matter," he said. Trump surrogates had discussed a possible unity government including both Netanyahu and Eisenkot with Israeli officials after the election. Meanwhile, three of Netanyahu's allied parties, Shas, Reli...

Trump made the remarks on the morning of the U.S. midterm elections, in a phone interview with Fox News' "Fox & Friends." "We give Israel $4 billion a year. Maryland Governor’s Race Could Decide Whether State Joins Federal Scholarship Tax Credit for 2027
Maryland’s choice of governor in today’s election could decide whether families in the state can benefit from the new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit, which begins in January 2027. The federal program was created last year through the “Big Beautiful Bill.” Starting in January 2027, individual taxpayers can claim a tax credit of up to $1,700 a year for donations to an IRS-approved Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO). Eligible families can then apply to an SGO for K-12 scholarships that can cover private school tuition, tutoring, after-school programs, classroom supplies and textbooks. States must opt in for their families to receive SGO funds. As of Oct. 27, 31 states had opted in, according to the IRS. Maryland was not among them. The governor has until Jan. 1 ...
