Jerusalem, Israel - July 16, 2024 - Israeli President Isaac Herzog hosted on Tuesday, 10th of Tammuz, July 16, at Beit Hanasi, in Jerusalem, Israel, a swearing in ceremony for seventeen new judges. Also present were Acting President of the Supreme Court, Judge Uzi Fogelman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, Yariv Levin, and other Members of Knesset.
The families of the new judges filled the Beit Hanasi main hall, with more children than usual present at official ceremonies. Each new judge was called up individually, made their personal declaration, signed, and posed for an official photo. The official group photo was taken at the end of the ceremony.
President Herzog, said in his remarks "I'm concerned and disturbed by the ongoing and unnecessary conflict surrounding the court system and appointments - especially to the Supreme Court. In the last month we have appointed and sworn in almost two hundred judges. The people of Israel are eager for everyone to leave behind the disputes of last year and deal with the most critical and urgent things. The State of Israel does not lack problems. We face enormous challenges. It is forbidden, simply forbidden!, that we once again reach polarization, upheavals and internal divisions that could weaken us as they weakened us before October 7.
"I repeat to you, dear members and members of the committee for the selection of judge - with a little effort and a little will, it is possible and necessary to reach agreements, to fill the ranks of the judicial system, and to maintain its strength, the stability and the statehood of the court system.
"You must be professional, sensitive and attentive. To place the good of the country and its citizens and the virtues of the law before your eyes, and at the same time - to see each and every citizen their pain and challenges, their past, and no less important - their future. This is a huge task, a real mission and we wish you great success today."
"Seventeen judges declared their allegiance this morning." said Fogelman. "Every declaration of confidence that was heard today expresses a significant strengthening of the judiciary, which will allow it to continue to provide quality and necessary service to the residents of the State of Israel."
He added, "The list of appointees today is a diverse list, and it reflects the beautiful face of Israeli society. Representation of the various groups that make up Israeli society in the legal system, along with adherence to standards of professional excellence, constitute a significant component in the design of the judiciary and in maintaining its position. This diversity allows different worldviews within the chambers of the court and contributes to the improvement and accuracy of the judicial decision."
"Despite the difficult days we are all going through, we are required to continue to ensure the provision of adequate legal service and to make a great effort to bring about the appointments of the necessary judges to the various courts. Today we are completing the swearing in of the judges appointed by the Committee for the Selection of Judges in recent months - 162 in number, all of whom were appointed by general agreement among the members of the Committee for the Selection of Judges."
"Thanks to the agreement we reached, for the first time judges were appointed from population groups that until now had difficulty reaching this status. This is something that is not obvious, and which was considered almost impossible until recently. Even today, there are judges here with us whose path was blocked in the past, despite their extraordinary abilities and skills," said Levin. "Your unanimous election suggest great potential."
