Jerusalem, Israel - Nov. 9, 2023 - After a month into Operation Iron Swords, the volunteering of Israelis and people around the world has been one constant positive theme of this unwanted war. The opportunities to bake, grill, schlep, and donate - from answering phones to just about anything you can name - seems to grow as the IDF fighting in Gaza proceeds to end Hamas military infrastructure and destructive capabilities.
The Michael Levin Base in Jerusalem supports lone soldiers and b'not sherut. The staff and volunteers have been working non-stop to help the young people from all over the world who came to serve in Israel without families with what they need, especially at this time of a war. Appreciation went to the Sephardic Community of Brooklyn for 800 boxes of donated clothing, and supplies they received. Included were socks, thermal clothing, sleeping bags, blankets, G Shock watches, male and female clothing, towels and sheets, and underwear donated by the families Salem, Harari, Orfali, and Levy.
With the help of volunteers, especially the Netiv Aryeh and Orayta Yeshivos for their assistance in unloading the boxes, the majority was quickly delivered to soldiers and their units. Some of the units who received donations were paratroopers, Kfir, Givati, police, border police, tanks, medics, rabbinical units, and Maglan.
Recent changes in The Base non-profit status enabled it to also help some of the hundreds of displaced families from the south and north with basic needs.
BJL visited The Base, when most of the 41 pallets of the boxes from the US had been removed. However, donations keep arriving by carload, food, supplies, even a computer. Soldiers drop in to get needed equipment, as young gap year students were donating their time to bake brownies and make sweet treats as a chesed project.
A very large crowd attended the funeral on Thursday morning at Har Herzl MIlitary Cemetery for Rose Lubin, a'h, H'yd, the young lone soldier from Atlanta, GA who was murdered by a 16-year-old terrorist. In the afternoon, volunteers at The Base organized a team of professionals to be on hand for counseling for those who needed help on the very difficult day.
According to The Base co-director Bonnie Holzberg Rosenbaum, one item she had to become familiar with since October 7 was "ceramic vests." The special vests for personal armor are to resist projectile penetration through its high hardness and compressive strength.
Because a war of this scope was unexpected, there is a shortage of critical military equipment for IDF soldiers, such as protective ceramic vests. It has been difficult to procure these items, not only because of associated costs, but because it proved a challenge to locate suppliers selling goods that meet appropriate IDF standards. These vests are lifesaving equipment, but costly. Each vest costs approximately $520.
Those looking for a simple way to volunteer, not to jump on a plane and come to pick agriculture as many are doing now, can consider making a donation.
While at the present time there is a long list of worthy causes, full disclosure these two are personal favorites.
Donations and information concerning The Michael Levin Base.
The wife of one IDF soldier has started a crowdfunding campaign to purchase ceramic vests for her husband's platoon. This particular platoon is located in the Gaza Envelope in southern Israel, right outside of Gaza. All donations, large and small, will help keep soldiers safe as they fight to eliminate Hamas terror to keep Israeli citizens from harm.
