Shabtai Shavit, who served as Mossad Director from 1989-1996, passed away today (Tuesday, 5 September 2023), during a private vacation in Italy. Upon learning of his passing, Mossad Director David Barnea issued the following to share in the sorrow of the family and those who serve in the Mossad:

Shabtai Shavit, the seventh director of the Mossad, was a pillar in the operations, intelligence and strategic security of the State of Israel.

Shabtai Shavit joined the Mossad in 1964 and began his career in the agency as a collection officer for the Tzomet in Iran. He served in operational and command positions in Israel and abroad, including head of the Caesarea Branch and Deputy Director of the Mossad.

During his tenure as Director of the Mossad, Shavit worked to expand and strengthen secret relations between the Mossad and agencies and countries throughout the region and the world, and contributed to establishing the peace agreement between Israel and Jordan.

After retiring, Shavit continued to contribute to preserving the organizational heritage and knowledge, and trained generations of Mossad directors and commanders. Shavit served as the longtime head of the Mossad retirees' association and saw this as an important mission.

The Mossad family bows its head today in humility and great sorrow over the passing of a brave, principled, dedicated and esteemed Mossad director and commander who devoted his life to the State of Israel.

May his memory be blessed."
