Baltimore, MD - Aug. 5, 2023  - A gun buyback event in southwest Baltimore successfully removed over 300 firearms from the streets, reports WBALTV. The initiative took place at the Edmondson Village Shopping Center, where people drove up and surrendered their weapons in exchange for $200 to $300, no questions asked. The event was organized in partnership between the Archdiocese of Baltimore and the Baltimore police, prompted by the high rates of fatal and non-fatal shootings in the city.

In tandem with the buyback, a peace-building fair was organized, offering legal aid for expungement and mental health resources. The event was particularly poignant, taking place at the same location where a teenager was fatally shot earlier in the year. City leaders emphasized the need for renewed hope and care for the city's youth as a key strategy in preventing violence.

The funds for the buyback, over $50,000, were raised by local parishes and fully utilized during the event. The collected weapons, including 17 semiautomatic guns, will be destroyed.
